Introducing Amanda from Workshop&…
Who is Amanda?
I am so driven and passionate about causes that I strongly believe in – which can sometimes cause me to become overly meticulous which drives my family and colleagues a little crazy!
What do you do?
Using my project management skills, I am the Operations arm of Workshop& – responsible for event delivery and more importantly, looking out for cool new bars and restaurants (and taste testing wine and cheese of course) for our events.
Why is this work important to you?
Juggling a full time job, a family and Workshop& is no easy task. But at the end of a Workshop& event, when our attendees tell us about the positive impact that our event had on their personal or professional life – it makes what we do worthwhile.
Our key goal is to empower and inspire. We are individually strong, successful women in our industry, but what Workshop& has set out to do is provide a platform to be able to share and learn valuable skills and create meaningful connections between individuals. My experience of attending workshops and networking events prior to Workshop& enabled me to slowly grow my confidence, making me the ambitious person I am today in my personal and professional life.
Why is confidence important to you?
Coming from a cultural background where women were taught to be quiet and respectful, it was difficult to break out of that shell, which hindered my career growth.
Confidence is like wearing a superhero cape – it makes you feel invincible.
This amazing feeling gives me the courage to take big steps and believe in my abilities, and most importantly – embrace the success that results from it.
Do you ever experience self-doubt?
Absolutely, and sometimes I even have sleepless nights questioning if I have made the right decision! I most notice self-doubt when a decision is likely to impact others.
What is a hurdle in your life that you have overcome?
I work in an industry that is predominantly male, and coming from a different cultural background means having to lead and manage teams, or even meeting new people can be very daunting.
I am fortunate that I am surrounded by an amazing support system – Elinor and Mersi from Workshop& are my cheerleaders. At work my line manager pushes me into situations that are intentionally uncomfortable which allows me to slowly grow and build my confidence to become the person that I am today.
If you need to pick yourself up how do you do this?
I plug in my earphones, put on some good music and go for a walk (or dance in my living room if I’m at home!).
What does living life confidently mean to you?
Living confidently means being able to be liberated by negative thoughts and feelings, so that you can allow yourself to grow and become the amazing person that you are, and then empowering others to do the same.
Do you set goals? How?
Yes I do for both work and life, because it is important to always have something to aspire for. Goals become the fuel that propels me out of bed each morning, and it is what keeps me going throughout the day.
I am not a big believer in long lists, but rather in learning to set realistic and achievable short term and long term goals. Goal setting is about setting yourself up for success, there is a sense of accomplishment in kicking goals, regardless of how big or small.
How do you stay on track?
I’m a visual person so to stay on track, I draw up a diagram of my goals with how I can achieve them within a particular time frame, and pin this on my board. This chart then gets reviewed on a monthly basis – noting that the goals are flexible and it is completely acceptable to change it, or push it back to accommodate new priorities and goals.
How do you celebrate wins?
It always starts with a gracious thank you to my support network – and then followed by a wonderful meal with my loved ones!
What are you most enjoying in life right now?
Being able to inspire and empower someone, through Workshop&, and at work, growing into a strong female leader and encouraging other women to grow their confidence in this male dominated field.
Any books or podcasts inspiring and motivating you right now?
I have been listening to Ruby Lee’s podcasts – she has such a positive energy, and has some great advice for side hustlers like us as we continue to grow Workshop&.
What is your next challenge?
Workshop& is looking to host another intimate networking event in November, and then we will be looking to host a (wait for it…) goal setting workshop early next year!
Finally, any words of wisdom that have resonated most in your life?
Do not be afraid of failure, embrace it as there is no success without it.
